In Malawi, children like Memory who are living in extreme poverty go to school hoping for a brighter future. That's not what they get. It's not right. Things CAN change. Be part of the change you want to see.

Memory sits in a class with over 200 students and only one teacher.

Children like Memory are in danger of dropping out of school and into a life of poverty. It's impossible to learn in a class of 200 children and without any books, pens, or desks. They are in a desperate situation.

Memory lives in poverty in a remote village in Malawi and wakes up at 6am every day to walk an hour to school. She loves learning and knows an education is the best chance she has for a better future. But the conditions in her class are dire.

There were more than 200 children in Memory's class. It was overcrowded and noisy. With no desks or chairs, children had to sit on bare concrete. There were not enough books, pens or paper. Memory couldn't hear her teacher or even ask for help. She could not learn or keep up.

Without an education, Memory was in real danger of being swept into the same cycle of poverty as her family.

How VSO is responding

Everything changed when VSO learning centres came to Memory's school. Memory now attends every day and is learning fast, with an educational tablet in her hand and a VSO educational expert by her side.

During focused learning sessions, in a calm and quiet environment, Memory has gained three essential life skills of reading, writing and counting. She enjoys learning and she now has the foundations for building a brighter future. Thanks to our pioneering approach, hundreds of children in Malawi are learning in this way. They learn at an accelerated level and can catch up on years of lost education, fast! Children are now confident and excited about going to school.
