At just 13, Alice was raped and became pregnant. She had nowhere safe to turn.
In Karamoja, Uganda, girls face extreme poverty, violence, and pressure to marry young. For many, school should be the safest place to be. But girls like Alice never get that far. She was living with her aunt, who was abusive and didn't let her go to school. Then, when she was 13, she was raped and fell pregnant. She wasn't safe to stay at home. She had nowhere to turn. But thanks to VSO volunteers who sparked change in her community, she found a rescue centre.

Alice has now been living in the rescue centre for four years with her daughter, Patience*. Trained by VSO, Alice's teachers provide engaging lessons that inspire the whole class to keep learning. While Alice is in school, Patience is in nursery. An education will give them both a safer, brighter future.
