VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries. Our high-impact approach brings people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action to change lives and make the world a fairer place.
VSO International is recruiting regional technical advisers to grow and develop VSO’s work on social inclusion and gender at country, regional and global level. The role will provide support to VSO’s Programme Managers in participatory approaches and transformational programme design, and methodological support in social exclusion and gender analysis.
Additional support in other areas may be needed, such as power, stakeholder mapping, resilience and systems approaches to development.
Skills, qualifications and experience
An understanding of social exclusion/inclusion and gender analysis and other participatory methodologies and a commitment to people led development.
This role will support our programs in Education, Health and Livelihoods and thus experience in those sectors is essential.
Experience in participatory research, appraisals and assessment
Skills in social exclusion and gender analysis and in one or more of the following:
• Qualitative research
• Power analysis
• Environmental analysis
• Economics for equality
• Stakeholder mapping
• Systems mapping
• Systems approaches
• Theories of change
• Transformational processes
• Community development
• Participatory action research
You will be a graduate or activist in poverty, gender or exclusion issues with an understanding of how change happens.
You will be passionate about participation and social inclusion.
You will have specialized in social inclusion and gender , and participatory development
• Experience of working in either health, educations or livelihoods sectors.
• Understanding of resilience.
• Experience of working in the international development contexts.
• Being up-to-date on the current thinking in international development and approaches to poverty
• Understanding of key considerations in working cross-culturally.
Possible locations likely to be in the Nairobi regional hub countries - Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Ghana,Rwanda.
