Donors pledge aid to Cambodia
04/06/2010
Cambodia is to receive the biggest aid package in its history this year.
However, donors have criticised the country for failing to put reform policies into practice, Irin News reports.
Contributors have pledged $1.1 billion (£750 million) this year, which was an increase from the $950 million received in 2009.
Prime Minister Hun Sen said the funds would be used effectively, but rights groups stated corruption is preventing the aid being utilised properly.
Ou Virak, head of the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights, said: "The onus for protecting donor aid falls squarely at the door of the donors themselves."
The World Bank stated the government needs to take control of the situation and ensure the money is distributed accordingly depending on development priorities.
It was recently announced the number of cases of malaria victims in Cambodia has increased significantly, as there has been a 41 per cent rise in such instances over the last year.
