Flood threats in Pakistan
26/05/2010
There are fears in Pakistan that possible floods could affect 50,000 people.
The country's National Disaster Management Authority has asked the government of the north-western Khyber-Pukhtoonkh'wa province to prepare for a possible emergency, Irin News reports.
Shangla, Mansehra, Kohistan and Kala Dhaka are some of the provinces lying downstream from Hunza-Nagar that could be hit by the waters.
Alamzeb Gul, a resident of Dasu in the Kohistan area, explained that the situation is causing uncertainty among citizens.
"People have been hearing about the possible flood here for over a week, but there is no information about emergency measures that are being taken or what people are to do," the townsperson said.
The Focus Humanitarian Assistance NGO in the region predicted around 30,000 to 50,000 individuals are vulnerable should disaster strike.
Last month, there were fears in Pakistan that an influx of internally displaced persons was adding extra pressure on host families in the country.
