Bangladesh agrees to resolve Myanmar border dispute

26/01/2010

Bangladesh and Myanmar have made an agreement to resolve a long-running dispute regarding their borders, according to an official from the former country.

Foreign secretary Mohammad Mijarul Quayes told Reuters reporters that the accord was established during a recent meeting between representatives from the two nations.

Mr Quayes added that the next step in sealing the agreement is for officials to gather again soon in order to define Bangladesh's offshore gas block rights by better segregating the border.

These developments come after a standoff between the two countries at the Bay of Bengal in 2008 as Myanmar began oil and gas exploration in the region, the news provider informed.

Both countries placed concentrated troops at various points along their border before Myanmar agreed to withdraw and discuss the issue instead.

According to the World Health Organization, over one million people are estimated to be internally displaced in the eastern border area of Myanmar due to decades of internal conflict.
